Learners’s permit


To be eligible, you must be at least 15 years old and able to provide proof of being enrolled in school. You must hold the permit for at least six months before you will be allowed to take the driving test. For the 14 ½ year old learner's permit you must be able to provide proof of being enrolled in a driver's education program from the school that you are attending. The 14 ½ year old permit is only good in the driver's education vehicle with the driver's education instructor. You must meet all other requirements. As the 14 ½ year old permit is a very limited permit when you reach the age of 15 you must apply for the regular 15 year old permit before your six months time frame will count towards being able to take your driving test.

You must provide the following:

·         A completed Application with notorized signatures of both parents or guardians. If parents are divorced, parent with custody must sign.

·         A social security card or a printout from the Social Security Administration. (Note: Metal social security cards are not acceptable.)

·         A certified copy of your birth certificate. (Note: Hospital certificates are not acceptable.)

·         If under 18 years of age, you must show proof that you are in school by presenting a signed Certification Of School Attendance form obtained from the school that you are attending. (Note: This form is not valid if over 30 days old.)

·         You must pass the written examination.

·         You must meet the required physical conditions of the eye examination.

·         You must pay the appropriate Fee- cash only.

 

Under 18 - Regular Class R Driver License


You must provide the following:

·         A completed Application with notorized signatures of both parents or guardians. If parents are divorced, parent with custody must sign.

·         A social security card or a printout from the Social Security Administration. (Note: metal social security cards are not acceptable.)

·         A certified copy of your birth certificate. (Note: Hospital certificates are not acceptable.)

·         You must show proof that you are in school by presenting a Certification Of School Attendance form obtained from the school that you are attending. (Note: This form is not valid if over 30 days old.) If applicant is under 18 years of age and married, a Certification of School Attendance form is not required. However, applicant my present a certified copy of the marriage license. Driver license will only be valid for one year or until next birthday.

·         You must pass the driving skills test.

·         You must pay the appropriate Fee - cash only.

 

 

Regular Class R Driver License


You are eligible if you are fifteen (15) years six (6) months of age or older and held a Learner's Permit for a minimum of six (6) months.

You must provide the following information:

·        A completed, signed Application form. If under 18 years of age, the parent's signature must be notorized.

·        A social security card or a printout from the Social Security Administration. (Note: metal social security cards are not acceptable.)

·        A certified copy of your birth certificate. (Note: Hospital certificates are not acceptable.)

·        If under 18 years of age, you must show proof that you are in school by presenting a Certificaiton Of School Attendance form obtained from the school that you are attending. (Note: This form is not valid if over 30 days old. )

·        You must pass the driving skills test. This may be waived if you are over 18 years of age and have held an out of state license for a least six (6) months.

·        You must pay the appropriate Fee - cash only.

·        You must provide Proof of Domicile (see policy below).

 

Driver Services Policy 7-1A: Proof of Domicile
State Statute 63-1-19 (1999 Legislative Session)

Effective July 1, 1999, any applicant for an original license who is over eighteen (18) years of age must show proof of domicile in this state to receive a license. No post office box number may be used as evidence of domicile. Any proof of documents must obtain a physical address. The examiner shall note on the application the type documentation used to determine domicile. Applicants under 21 years of age may use documentation that applies to their parents' domicile.

The following evidence or other reliable evidence may be considered in establishing, but is not necessarily determinative of domicile. Proof of domicile must be in the applicant's or applicant's spouse's name, or in the event applicant is under 21 years of age, their parents' name.

1. Electric Bill
2. Water Bill
3. Lease or Rent Agreement
4. Car Tag Registration Receipt
5. Mortgage Papers
6. Homestead Exemption Receipt
7. Bank Statement with Physical Address (no blank checks accepted!)
8. Notarized employer verification on their letterhead stating address of applicant (must include phone number)
9. Mississippi license issued to parent or legal guardian when applicant is under 21 years of age.

NOTE: A new Mississippi resident who presents a valid out-of-state license is no longer required to take a written or skills test. See Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for requirements.
