Application for a Driver’s License in Maryland

 

 

Maryland Learner's Permit

 

To Get a Maryland Learner's Permit, Please Bring:

 

Proof of age/identity, lawful presence, verifiable Social Security Number or proof of ineligibility, and Maryland residence. Please refer to Sources of Proof for required documentation.

 

·         Minimum age for applicants is 15 years and 9 months.

 

·         If under 16, you must provide a completed Learner's Permit School Attendance Certification form (DL-300) to an MVA official during the learner's permit application process.

 

·         You must pass a vision test and knowledge test.

·         If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application or, if the applicant has no parent or guardian or is married, an adult employer of the applicant or any other responsible adult may cosign the application.

·         You must be 18 to obtain a Learner's Permit for a CDL Intrastate, 21 years of age for Interstate.  In addition, you must also have a full driver's license (does not include a motorcycle license).

 

·         A valid U.S. Department of Transportation physical card (if applying for a Learner’s Permit to drive a commercial motor vehicle).

 

·         Out-of-State learner's permits cannot be exchanged for a Maryland Learner's Permit.

 

·         You must also complete the Maryland Graduated Licensing System requirements.

 

 

 

To Get Another Maryland Learner's Permit, Please Bring:

 

If you already hold a Learner’s Permit that is expired or is about to expire, and want another one, you must reapply as if it was your first Learner’s Permit and bring your proof of age/identity, lawful presence, verifiable Social Security Number or proof of ineligibility, Maryland residence and your expiring Learner’s Permit. Please refer to Sources of Proof for required documentation.

 

·         You must pass a vision and knowledge test.

·         If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application or, if the applicant has no parent or guardian or is married, an adult employer of the applicant or any other responsible adult may cosign the application.

·         A valid U.S. Department of Transportation physical card (if applying for a Learner’s Permit to drive a commercial motor vehicle).

·         Out-of-State learner's permit cannot be exchanged for a Maryland Learner's Permit.

 

Sources of Proof accepted:

 

 

·         Valid, unexpired U.S. passport*; or

·         Original or certified copy of a birth certificate filed with a State Office of Vital Statistics (OVS) or equivalent agency in the applicant’s state of birth (U.S. or territorial)*; or

·         Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) issued by the U.S. Department of State (DOS), Form FS-240, DS-1350 or FS-545*; or

·         Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551, issued by the U.S. DHS*; or

·         Certificate of Naturalization, form N-550 or N-570 issued by the U.S. DHS*; or

·         Certificate of Citizenship, Form N-560 or N-561 issued by the U.S. DHS*; or

·         Unexpired employment authorization documents (EAD), Form I-776 or I-688B issued by the U.S. DHS*; or

·         Unexpired foreign passport with a valid, unexpired U.S. visa affixed accompanied by the approved I-94 form documenting the applicant’s most recent admittance into the U.S*; or

·         Unexpired employment authorization documents (EAD)*; or

·         Any other documents designated acceptable by U.S. Department of Homeland Security and acceptable by the Administration.

 

*Also satisfies lawful presence requirements.

 

·         Documentation of a valid, verifiable SSN or proof of ineligibility

·         Original Social Security (SS) Card; or

·         W-2 form, not more than 18 months old; or

·         SSA-1099 form, not more than 18 months old; or

·         Non-SSA-1099 form, not more than 18 months old; or

·         Pay stub bearing the applicant’s name and SSN, not more than 3 months old; or

·         Documentation demonstrating non-work authorized status; or

 

Other proof of ineligibility for an SSN acceptable by the Administration.
